Album Review- SPRINTS- All That is Over

I first heard SPRINTS on their debut- 2024s Letter to Self. It was a post punk blast of energy not muh different from what we might hear from IDLES, Wet Leg or Fontaines DC.

2025’s All That Is Over climbed a bit higher into the mainstream consciousness . WIth (mostly) single word titles and three minute songs, it is hard not to be won over. Particularly when the Irish band delivers perfectly on “Descartes”.

Opener “Abandon” is a slow intense song recalling Joy Division but it’s mostly bluster after that. But pinning them down just as a punk band is oversimplifying too. On “Something’s Gonna Happen” it sort of melds the Post punk influences into something that could satisfy an arena. The same can be said for a song like “Beg” that starts sounding like a Factory Records recording that twists into an angry punk tune. Closer “Desire” is over 6 minutes long building into a guitar fueled ball of rage and is probably closer to PJ Harvey or Hole than it is to Wet Leg.

I am nostalgic for the alternative boom of the 90s and I am nostalgic for the early 00s, but it does seem like we are seeing a new boom of bands like this.
